I recently read a letter that another photographer received on her doorstep and graciously decided to share on her blog (here). This letter was so powerful it influenced me to write a post on why I think photography is important. Pictures have always been a big part of my life – I ALWAYS had my camera with me at any big events and you would always see me with my camera on the last day of school so I’d have pictures of friends that I might not get to see as often as I’d like in the summer (if you knew me in High School, you know what I’m talking about).
As stated in the letter – the writer learned too late the importance of capturing memories with photos and instead used her money on things that wouldn’t last such as a manicure, hair cut, etc.
I can see why people would say that photographer’s time or photos are too expensive…it seems like a lot of money at one time. But if you think about it as memories you will get to cherish forever or even a way to make someone live on, long after they are gone…it really is invaluable. I know that every time I look at a picture of my grandpa it brings a smile to my face and I can hear him calling me “Abby Dabby” and laughing – and what I wouldn’t give to have him back and be able to have a photography session with him! Pictures are about the emotion you feel when you look back at them, or remembering the way you felt that day -and that…is something you can’t put a price on!
